Thanks to everyone who braved the rain for Happy Birthday Mr Sinatra at Canary Wharf. What a great night we had! I thought everyone would go home once the rain came but they just stayed and partied.

But only a performer with complete vocal confidence and many years of experience and good musical judgement could make a show like this work so well; and Harry the Piano, who can play anything in any style, completed the picture.

Proving once again just what a consummate performer he is, Williams pays homage by delivering a sizzling two hours of easy entertainment.

It’s no wonder, really, why Christmas shows by the likeable, Grimsby-born Williams sell out. This one, at nearly two hours long, with two sets’ worth of seasonable songs, carols and not-so-wild cards including lush renditions of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now and Carole King’s You’ve Got a Friend, felt faultless.

Then again he conducts the proceedings with such gentle, unassuming humour that even the most atheistic of souls — I had one sitting next to me, as a matter of fact — will be willing to join in.

This consummate artist, accompanied by Matt Regan on piano, works the room well as he roams amongst the patrons, entertaining them with his cheeky patter that avoids any saccharine falseness.

Williams develops a splendid rapport with the audience, and his affectionate sense of humour, pitch-perfect vocal delivery, a mellow tone and sense of phrasing puts him with the best.
