Course introduction.
-
Let’s start by defining exactly what we are talking about when we say cabaret.
-
No one seems to know what it is or where it comes from. Apparently you either have it or you don’t and Simon Cowell’s made millions spotting it. The ‘X’ factor. What is it? Why do you need it, and how can you get more of it?
-
Your show needs a strong theme, a ‘hook’ to draw the audience in and give it some structure. Chances are there’s one particular genre of music that will form the foundation of your show: musical theatre, pop, rock and roll, swing etc. but ultimately your show should be about you.
-
Starting with a blank piece of paper can be daunting. Using templates is a tried and tested way to save lots of time and keep your creativity on track.
-
-
-
Talking to your audience, the way you interact with them really is the magic glue that holds your show together. In cabaret what you say is almost as important as what you sing. In fact, I would argue is more important.
-
As a singer you’re completely reliant on the band to make your show work. You’ll want to be on good terms from the moment your rehearsal begins so they’re on your side and keen to do their best for you. All the band want from you is professionalism.
-
Getting the best out of your sound engineer is really all about communication and respect.
-
You don't have to be an expert in lighting to get great lights for your show. You just need to understand the way to communicate what you need to your lighting engineer.
-
Being prepared in advance of the rehearsal and letting the sound technician know any special requirements can save headaches later on.
-
Take time to present yourself properly in a way that reflects and enhances who you are and what you’re trying to say.
-
-
Expect to learn from your mistakes and be happy to make changes.
-
-
Let’s look at how to get an agent and what to expect when you find one.
-
One of the advantages of working on a cruise ship is that the audience is already there for you. If you’re on land you’ll have a lot of work to do.
-
At the end of the day it’s all about your voice. No voice means no work.
-
Recording an album can be a great way to promote who you are and show the world the kind of music you love to sing - in your unique way.
-
You now have all the tools you need to develop your cabaret journey. But make no mistake, it takes a lot of work and dedication. Stay focussed and enjoy the journey.
-
-
-
The old model of selling CDs to pay for your album is dying and we need to find new ways to fund our albums.
-
Cruise ships are a great place for many cabaret artistes to work but are they right for you?
-
I cover working with production staff briefly in the main workshop but here I go into more detail about how to get the best out of the production staff you’re working with.
-
Who decides how much something is worth? Whether it’s a CD, a musical arrangement, or you as an artiste, the price people are prepared to pay all comes down to how valuable they perceive it to be. This short bonus module is all about increasing your perceived value to bookers and audience members.
