My Musical Theatre Debut review
Reviewed at Grimsby College Of Music & Art, Grimsby by Magnus Gardham for Grimsby Evening Telegraph.Don’t get excited. I haven’t been signed up for Cameron Macintosh’s latest production. I’m going back twenty years (I don’t feel old enough to have done anything 20 years ago) to 20th July 1991. The place: Grimsby; the show: Adam & Eve; the critic’s comment on my performance: “Muddling through”.
To be fair, it is a weird piece. It’s all original music (who could forget the classic “Matter Song”) and as the review says, there is even “the rather confusing appearance of Adolf Hitler to contend with”.
I remember it all very clearly because I, as Adam, dressed in flowing chiffon, was required to provide 3 minutes of “modern” interpretive dance while “searching” on stage for Eve. It was excruciating – for me and the audience.
I know it’s only a matter of time before someone posts it all on YouTube. When they do, please be gentle with me – this is before I knew I should stick to crooning the ballads of Hoagy Carmichael.
