Posing in a subway off London’s Embankment while hassled commuters shove past was not how I imagined my latest photo shoot would turn out, but then I’d not worked with Katie Hyams before. Katie specialises in working out of the studio with natural light and everyday environments. She’d scouted a few unusual locations in advance and seeing the look on my face as we arrived at each one, just kept saying “trust me, it’ll look great on camera”. I think she was right. My ever thinning hairline means I have to regularly update my publicity photos so that they maintain at least some vague resemblance to the real thing. I will never forget checking in with the Cruise Director on a ship a few years ago. I waited in his office to find a very large picture of a much younger version of me on his wall, complete with a full head of hair, sparking eyes and not a wrinkle in sight. I reminisced what it was to be so young, and wondered where they had found such an old picture. Eventually the Cruise Director came in to his office and as I introduced myself he face dropped. I actually saw him look at me and then look at my old photograph and he could not hide his disappointment. “Wow” he said, “you’ve changed”.
